Improve PC Performance: Top 7 ways to make PC faster

Published

on

This article focuses on the essential part of our day-to-day life, i.e., computer, PC, or any other laptop device. We will tell multiple ways to improve PC performance & speed up the devices for our users and viewers.

Top 7 ways to improve pc performance

1. Uninstall unnecessary software

Your computer comes preloaded with many applications that many people won’t use but can consume system resources. You can quickly identify these when you see a popup prompting you to update a program that you have never used before.

  • Remove from your device and free up disk space as much as you can
  • Just click on the Start button and Navigate the All apps menu
  • Here you can view all of the applications that are installed – and the ones you haven’t installed
  • Once you find the application you want to uninstall, right-click on the icon to see the “Options” menu

Or, you can right-click on Start and go to Programs and Features. Windows Cortana can also be helpful because it can perform a search for “Programs” in its search box. You’ll find a history of which apps you’ve used recently and which take up the most disk space. After checking what’s installed, you can decide which application can be deleted to help in improving your system performance.

You should also know which programs are required for your computer to run correctly and which can be discarded. One of the causes these applications slow down your PC is because they often start up automatically when you boot your device.

Are you not sure whether you want these programs permanently erased? You can take a more in-depth view of the applications you tend to remove within the menus below.

2. Limit the programs at the startup

You can also check which applications run when your PC boots up along the same lines. Windows 10 has a Task Manager that makes choosing what you are running and what you can start in the background much more accessible.

  • To Navigate Task Manager, just press Ctrl-Shift-Esc.
  • A box will appear that will list all the applications that are installed on your device device
  • It gives you detailed info about the RAM each program uses when you start your PC
  • Tock adjust, right-click on the application you want to change, and tell it not to run.

You can always modify the settings if you notice that a program is no longer running, impacting how you use your PC. If to check, you can always restart your computer and see how it runs without specific applications available at startup.

3. Add more RAM to your PC

Windows 10 uses less RAM than the previous versions in terms of memory usage, but increasing RAM is a tried-and-true way to speed up your devices.

If you own a convertible or detachable laptop, you’ll likely need to settle for what came in the box. It is possible to add extra RAM to some business and gaming laptops, but it can still be tricky.

It’s much easier to add extra RAM to desktop computers, and it’s cheaper, too. Anyone with a basic idea of the inside of a desktop tower is capable of installing more RAM in an hour or so.

You can also take your computer/Laptop to a computer shop to install more RAM. Suppose you’re worried about potentially compromising your system or doing this incorrectly. In that case, having an opinion from someone who knows what they are doing can relieve you and make adding extra memory easy.

4. Check out for spyware and viruses.

It’s nearly impossible not to pick up a virus at some moment while browsing the web. Still, the new Windows Defender has made it easier than ever to locate malware that may be causing significant issues on your PC. Third-party programs are easy to install and can be just as effective in removing any spyware or viruses that you may pick up.

Some applications are much better than others, and some can take up more disk space, which can then cause issues with speed. Ideally, you want to find efficient software and remove malware altogether, but that doesn’t take too much space on your PC.

Let’s consider installing two types of software for computer performance monitoring. Malware cleanup programs can solve lagging issues with speed or popups. However, it would help look into applications that offer ongoing protection and run in the background.

Little research can help you find the software that works within your budget or with your specific operating system. There can come some compatibility issues if you’re downloading free software, so double-check everything before installing and don’t run into additional performance problems.

5. Using Disk Cleanup and defragmentation.

Every computer has several files and programs that are not used in a while or are unnecessary. Disk Cleanup allows you to find applications and files that you can delete from your device and free up some drive space for the programs you will use ahead.

It is straightforward to access Disk Cleanup.

  • You’ll be sent to the program from the Start button or Cortana search box.
  • A quick scan will show you all the temporary files, installed applications, and web pages that you haven’t used or are no longer needed.
  • It will automatically delete all of them and clean up some space for you.

Disk Cleanup’s usefulness depends on how much RAM you have on your computer, making your computer run slower than it usually would. In this case, installing more RAM on your device may be suitable.

You should also schedule defragmentation of disks regularly to know how much hard disk space you have. Windows has a good Optimize Drives tool, which you can access from the Start button or your Cortana search box. Many third-party programs can help clear out files you don’t use anymore.

6. Consider a startup SSD

A startup solid-state drive (SSD) can take some pressure off the processor when your computer boots up and you want better performance. Tend to run several applications simultaneously or use photo and video editing software. An SSD can go a long way toward making these programs run much smoother and load faster.

While they’re installed mostly on desktop computers, SSDs can also be used on some laptop models. When your device does not have the option of using an internal SSD, you can purchase an external Solid State drive that will connect to your computer with a USB 3.0. This drive can also give you the extra push that you require at startup to complete tasks and provide a boost for apps that need more temporary memory to run correctly.

Depending on how you use your PC, you can find several SSD options that will work within your price range. Storage review sites online can be a valuable source of information when you want to choose the right drive for your PC, and you also need to know if it is compatible with your operating system.

7. Take a look at your web browser.

Slight adjustments can also make a massive difference in the speed of your PC. The browser you are using can cause you to speed up or slow down the rate at which web pages and images load. If you have been using a particular browser and notice a lag time, consider an alternative to seeing if the loading speeds are better than before.

The browser you’re using is not the only thing that may be slowing your computer when you’re using the web. If you have a cache that has not been cleared in a while, you’ll want to visit your settings and ensure it’s removed.

Your cache includes what you pick up when you are visiting some websites. Many sites use cookies to figure out your browsing habits, and the ads you may click when you visit a place will leave one too. A cache has these files as information, and if you spend a lot of time online, these files can be used and can cause your computer to run more slowly.

Fortunately, it’s an easy fix.

There are two ways to do it in top web browsers:

For Internet Explorer:

  • Navigate “Internet Options”
  • Click on the “General” tab
  • Check for the “Browsing History” option
  • Select both “Temporary Internet Files” and “Website Data”
  • Click “Delete”

For Google Chrome:

  • Navigate “More settings.”
  • Go to “More tools.”
  • Hit “Clear browsing data.”
  • Note that Chrome Browser allows you to delete data within a specific period.
  • If you have never deleted the files in your cache before, you will have to select the “All time” option.
  • Check all the boxes “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files.”
  • Click “Clear data.”

You should be warned that cookies can also include autofill information in your search bar, so it’s a good idea to bookmark your favorite websites in that case.
